Abstract

Teenage pregnancy poses significant socio-economic challenges in Rwanda, particularly within Bugesera Teenage pregnancy poses significant socio-economic challenges in Rwanda, particularly within Bugesera District, where it constrains human capital development. This study assesses the economic implications of adolescent pregnancy on educational attainment, employment, income, and household welfare. Employing a case-control mixed-methods design, the research combines primary quantitative data from 100 adolescents (50 adolescent mothers and 50 non-pregnant peers matched by age and location) and qualitative insights from 10 key informants with secondary national statistics for contextualization. Results indicate that teenage pregnancy severely disrupts human capital accumulation. Descriptive statistics reveal a 70% school dropout rate among adolescent mothers compared to 5% in the control group, and 82% unemployment among respondents versus 15% in the control group. Inferential analysis using multiple regression confirms that teenage pregnancy has a significant negative effect on human capital development (β = -0.43, p < 0.001), mediated by educational disruption, limited employment opportunities, and household economic strain. The model explains 68% of the variance in human capital outcomes (R² = 0.68). Qualitative findings triangulate these statistics, highlighting stigma, childcare responsibilities, and lack of vocational support as key barriers. The study concludes that addressing teenage pregnancy requires integrated interventions, including reproductive health services, policies supporting school re-entry, and vocational training. These findings provide evidence-based insights for policy reforms aimed at enhancing human capital and promoting sustainable socio-economic development in Rwanda.
